Bert Uimonen

Herbert Ernest (Bert) Uimonen was born in Paddington, London on the 15th November 1908, the eldest child of Alexander and Hester Uimonen. Berts mother Hester was born in London to German parents and father Alexander was a Finnish “Journeyman Tailor” having arrived from Hamburg in 1900, he was employed by http://www.daviesandson.com/ Of Saville Row.

In 1923 Alexander died of alchoholism, leaving his widow and three children destitute, I don’t know exactly  what happened to Bert at this time but his younger sister was “fostered” out by Hester, and his younger brother was given to Doctor Barnados, ending up being shipped to Canada where he spent the rest of his life.

On 4 July 1924, Bert was entered into an “Industrial School” childrenshomes.org.uk/ClerkenwellFieldLane in Clerkenwell, London as a vangrant.

In  March 1928, Bert served three months in detention for the theft of a motor car. He then in October was sentenced to three years “Detention Under Penal Servitude” in Borstal for the theft of £32 from his employers.

(Note. This is where I find that things get interesting.) On 28 December 1931, Berts son was born to Rosa Waddleton in Chelsea, London; meaning that he was out of detention by the previous March. With the evidence on son Alexanders birth certificate that Bert was a chef, and the fact that on the divorce papers of Rosa and her husband that a liason occured at a specific London hotel, I am assuming that Rosa had travelled to London to be in service and they met both working at the establishment.

From the London electoral rolls, I am assuming that Rosa and Bert lived as husband and wife in Hugh street, London. In 1934 she appears as Rosa Uimonen but no marriage record has been found.

In 1935, son Alexander is given to the National Childrens Home for adoption and in 1936, Rosa marries Bombadier Harold Wilson in Lambeth.

Nothing else can be found of Herbert Uimonen…yet!
